Lithographic limestone excavation Wattendorf
The Natural History Museum Bamberg will launch its next paleontological excavation campaign in Wattendorf (Upper Franconia) in 2026. The exceptional Wattendorf site yields excellently preserved fossils from the middle Kimmeridgian (Upper Jurassic). During the scientific excavation, lithographic limestone fossils are uncovered in a stratigraphically controlled manner, documented, and recovered.
In contrast to other lithographic limestone deposits, fossils in Wattendorf are relatively abundant. Previous excavations have produced a wide variety of invertebrates and fish fossils, as well as two new species of pterosaurs, several new turtles, and rhynchocephalians.
Accommodation will likely be provided in a nearby holiday apartment.
Participants are required to bring their own field equipment (weatherproof clothing, sturdy footwear (safety shoes), work clothes, and sun protection). In addition, sufficient food and drinks should be brought, along with a high level of motivation, an interest in paleontology, and a positive attitude. Good physical fitness and endurance are prerequisites for participation.
Participation in the excavation is possible either after concluding a volunteer agreement or as part of a mandatory internship for university studies or vocational training. Minimum duration of participation: 10 working days. An internship certificate will be issued upon completion.
